The information below is from the 2026-2027 campaign. It will be updated in Janurary or February of 2027, but the process will be similar if you are curious.

Student Body Officers are 8 Seniors that represent the entire Cottonwood Student Body. We encourage all Juniors interested to run for office! WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE AN SBO?
SBO Roles and Responsibilities
Remember the position specific responsibilities are only a small portion of the responsibilities of an SBO. Most of the class time will be working on the big schoolwide initiatives like assemblies and activities. All Secretary positions are determined by teacher vote, not student vote.
The SBO President is a very big job. This should be your main focus for your senior year. The SBO President cannot be president of any other group. You must be ready to dedicate your entire senior year to this position. The SBO President should have previous experience in Student Government

-Create daily class agendas
-Coordinate & delegate responsibilities
-Support other roles
-Organize and assign event or activity roles
-Work closely in tandem with advisors
-Implement and monitor the Humans of Cottonwood Instagram account
-Support other roles
-Help organize and assign event or activity roles
-Take turns with the president in leading Student Government class
-Lead Homeroom initiatives
-Coordinate with the School PTA Board
-Focus on inclusion and sense of belonging at Cottonwood
-Coordinate with other school organizations
-Coordinate and send daily minutes for Homeroom and class.
-Create the assembly scripts and communicate with officers about assembly assignments.
Remember the secretary campaigns to the teachers and the teachers vote for the secretary position.
-Attend school events to take pictures and video
-Maintain and post to the Historian Instagram account
-Create the annual Historians Assembly
-Create any videos for other assemblies/events
-Coordinate display case photos
-Coordinate Student Government photo shoots
-Coordinate all intercom and YouTube announcements
-Run the Colt Instagram account
-Implement multiple ways to inform students
-Help the advisor update the Stampede website
Communications is a busy constant job. Daily announcement require that the officer be organized and on time or early to class.
-Oversee the creation of all dance and event banners and posters
-Coordinate & approve Student Government artwork
-Create designs for school use
-Maintain organization and inventory of all art supplies
-Help the Dance Officers with dance decorations
-Implement ideas to increase school spirit and support activities
-Coordinate leaders for the Stampede Student Section at games
-Obtain schedules from sports teams and groups to assist Communications Officers
-Coordinate game themes and tailgates and bleacher parties.
-Implement ideas to include all students in Dances
-Choose dance themes
-Coordinate any decorations
-Help find and coordinate with DJ for dances
-Coordinate photo booth for dances
SBO Expectations and Requirements
Any eligible junior can run to be an SBO. We are looking for leaders, innovative thinkers and students that really care about Cottonwood!
The requirement is a 3.0 GPA and a 3.0 CPA for Quarter 2. Both will be expected to be maintained while in office.
SBOs are required to be enrolled in the Student Government SBO Class for the entire year. Additionally, there will be an entire Student Government Homeroom class that will include all the SBOs and all the Class Officers.
SBOs are the appointed leaders of Cottonwood. The activities, events, assemblies and initiatives take a significant amount of time to plan. An SBO is not eligible to hold the president position in another organization at Cottonwood. Being elected as an SBO is a commitment that you will need to dedicate a considerable amount of time in order to fulfill your roles and responsibilities.
In order to be prepared for events at the beginning of the school year, we will need to complete important planning during the Summer Break. On average, we spend about 7-10 days throughout the summer working on Student Government tasks. There is a required SBO Leadership Camp that is scheduled June 1-3, 2026 at USU.

All RULES of Cottonwood High School are to be obeyed.
Any negative interactions between SBO candidates, to include verbal, online, or physical, will result in immediate suspension of the candidate’s current campaign and will preclude participation in Class Officer elections.
Candidate initiated campaigning of any kind during class time is not appropriate.
Even if you are running unopposed, you will be required to complete the Website Profile, Video to Peers, Question and Answer, and Task of the Webpage Campaign/Portfolio. If you fail to complete those components, you will be dropped as a candidate and an application will be opened up to anyone that would like to apply. If no other student wants to run, that position will remain vacant.

Step 2: Complete the Digital Application

This form will acknowledge that you intend to run for SBO. You will also acknowledge that you understand the expectations of the office and the campaign regulations. A parent or guardian also needs to sign. Please have them read and understand everything involved in becoming an SBO.
The application also includes leadership questions and questions that will take some time and thought. Give yourself at least a half hour to complete the entire application. After completing the application, please watch your Granite District Email for a message from an advisor about application acceptance.
*CHANGE IN PROCEDURE as of 2/19/26: Before, Mrs. Hsiao would email a final list of candidates. NOW, there will be a list of candidates running for each position listed below. This list will be in order of application received and updated regularly. You will have until March 6 at 5:00 PM to change positions. Email Mrs. Hsiao at jehsiao@graniteschools.org using your Granite District email to ask for a change in position. A final list will be posted March 6 after 5:00 PM.
On the evening of March 6, an advisor will share the Google Site Campaign/Portfolio with you to complete.

Step 4: Prepare Webpage Campaign/Portfolio

After your Digital Application is accepted, an advisor will share a Google Site Link with you through your Granite District email. This webpage will be BOTH your campaign page to peers AND your portfolio. The components listed below will be included in this webpage. Read the details in the Election Packet very carefully.

Step 5: Teacher Recommendations
Student Government advisors will be sending out the teacher recommendation forms to all your teachers at the start of campaign week. You will not see these recommendations. Your job is to follow up with your teachers during campaign week to ensure they have completed the form for you. Your teachers will rate your performance in their class based on your demonstration of cooperation, leadership and honesty.
Step 6: Voting and Winner Announcement
Voting will take place March 18 and 19 online with a voting form in Homeroom classes.
On the evening of March 19th, advisors will email SBO candidates the list of winners. Those winners will be announced to the school on March 20 at the SBO Announcements Assembly/March Madness Sports Competition.
